King’s College School, Cascais, a distinguished member of the Inspired Education Group, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Portuguese Curriculum and Culture to join our leadership team, reporting directly to the Executive Head, alongside the other members of the whole-college Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

The Head of Portuguese Curriculum and Culture is a visible focal point for our Portuguese community at King's, ensuring the seamless integration of the Portuguese language and culture within an international context. This role oversees the Ministry of Education subjects in the school, ensuring academic attainment and progress for students pursuing our bilingual curriculum in the Primary School while also ensuring compliance with national regulations.

The Head of Portuguese Curriculum and Culture will manage and report on all matters concerning Ministry of Education subjects, including but not limited to curriculum, policies, procedures, staff welfare, and communication. (S)he will play a key role in implementing the school’s mission and contributing to its overall development.

The Head of Portuguese Curriculum and Culture will champion excellence in Portuguese First Language teaching, overseeing First Language Portuguese teachers and ensuring that King's Cascais becomes a center of national excellence for the study of Portuguese for native-speaking children and their families. This includes achieving outstanding examination results at GCSE First Language Portuguese and IB Portuguese First Language Group 1, in line with King’s commitment to the flourishing of Portuguese language studies across all age groups. The postholder will be senior to the Head of MFL Portuguese but should foster a culture of collegiality, teamwork, and shared enterprise with the Head of MFL Portuguese, recognizing that most Portuguese teachers work across both subject areas and age groups.

As such, the Head of Portuguese Curriculum and Culture will be responsible for teaching some Portuguese (primarily as a first language but potentially as a foreign language) while receiving timetable relief for wider responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure King’s School seamlessly embeds the Portuguese language and culture within an international context, working closely with the leadership team to integrate Portugal’s history and culture into the academic program. Ensure that Portuguese language provision is of the highest standard for those who choose to pursue it, particularly within the bilingual program.
Lead the development of a proprietary bilingual academic model for children aged 3 to 10 years, combining the Cambridge Primary curriculum with the Ministry of Education’s curriculum to create a seamless path for students to transition between Portuguese and international education.
Ensure the school complies with national regulations by overseeing the activities of different departments regarding regulatory and inspection matters.
Provide an environment that supports appropriate social, emotional, and academic growth for all students.
Ensure that the Ministry of Education program adheres to legal, financial, and organizational requirements.
Support the Executive Head in developing policies and procedures that align with the school’s vision, mission, accreditation guidelines, international education standards, and local laws.
Manage all aspects of the Ministry of Education subjects, including curriculum development, extra-curricular activities, staff evaluation and development, technology integration, and timetabling.
Assess the effectiveness of school practices, ensuring the best outcomes for students while staying updated on curriculum, instruction, and assessment innovations.
Oversee First Language Portuguese provision, ensuring outstanding student outcomes, particularly in GCSE First Language Portuguese and IB Portuguese (Higher and Standard Levels) Group 1.
Collaborate with the Head of MFL Portuguese to design and implement curriculum, instruction, and assessment frameworks, fostering a collegial approach to Portuguese language education.
Provide teachers with the necessary resources and professional development opportunities to excel in their roles.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

Educational Background: A degree in Portuguese Language and Literature or a related field, with a strong academic track record (e.g., First or Upper Second Class Honours) and a recognized teaching qualification.
Proven Academic Excellence: Experience teaching Portuguese at GCSE and IB (or equivalent, such as A Levels), with a history of securing top academic outcomes, including high proportions of students achieving top grades.
Analytical Insight: The ability to articulate what drives excellent progress and performance in Portuguese examination specifications, providing a clear vision for academic success.
Experience in Academic Environments: A minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience in a fast-paced, academically ambitious school, including teaching Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13).
Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a department, with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Innovative Teaching: A passion for teaching and the ability to inspire students through creative and engaging lessons.
Assessment Expertise: Experience in developing and implementing effective assessment strategies to monitor and enhance student learning.
Commitment to Growth: A proactive approach to personal and professional development, staying updated on advancements in Portuguese language education.
