We are looking for a resourceful, independent, and organized MSc researcher able to integrate into an organization that is developing innovative products and services to protect crops against pests and diseases.
The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate a solid background in microbiology and have experience in the field of biological control agent isolation and characterization.
Main responsibilities
The researcher reports directly to the Director New Biopesticides of InnovPlantProtect and has the following responsibilities:
• Develop and apply existing methodology to construct microbial libraries from different sources.
• Develop and apply existing methodology for high-throughput microbial library screening to identify biological control agents (BCA) against different plant pathogens (bacterial and/or fungal).
• Molecularly characterize the mode of action of potential BCAs.
• Test potential BCAs ex vivo and in planta.
• Molecular cloning and plasmid construction.
• Expression and purification of proteins.
• Interact and collaborate diligently intra and inter departmentally.
• Register, interpret and report experimental results accordingly to InPP´s established procedures.
Essential requirements
• Master’s degree in Microbiology or in related area.
• Experience in microbiology.
• Experience in culturing microorganisms (ex. Bacteria and/or fungi).
• Experience in molecular biology (general DNA manipulation techniques, and cloning).
• Interest in molecular phytopathology.
• Fluency in English, spoken and written.
• Ability and interest in supervising visiting students.
• Ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary, project-oriented team, with demonstrated problem-solving skills and flexibility.
• Flexibility to work in Lisbon (FCT-NOVA) for short periods as part of a collaborative project.

• Experience in developing high-throughput screens.
• Experience in Fungal genetics.
• Experience in Bacterial genetics.
• Experience with Fluorescence Microscopy.
InnovPlantProtect is a private non-profit association that aims to create innovation for the protection of crops, seeds and post-harvest products, in particular through:
• Development of new technologies and knowledge, as well as the improvement of previously developed technologies, to protect crops, seeds and post-harvest products, as well as their intellectual protection and availability;
• Development of applied scientific research to introduce the developed technologies in the market, and to develop processes and products;
• Provide technical support to companies and entities, public or private, assisting them in the introduction of biotechnological strategies, methods and processes, and in the orientation and implementation of industrial research and development, directed towards the protection of crops, seeds and post-harvest products;
• Collaboration with public or private institutions, national or foreign in their areas of activity.
Workplace
The place of work will be the headquarters of InnovPlantProtect, at the INIAV Elvas pole, in the former National Plant Breeding Station (Elvas, Portugal).
Salary and contract
A full-time contract, starting 1st October 2024 until 30st September 2027 with a trial period of one month. All the activities to be developed will be subject to confidentiality clauses.
Gross remuneration will be 1.559€ (14 months – 21.826 € /year) and 6€ for daily lunch subsidy.
