Job Description:
We are looking for a creative and flexible person who will play a lead role in implementing advanced computer systems to collect, store, analyze, and distribute scientific data. You should have professional experience in systems administration (including Linux systems) and a strong desire to constantly learn and innovate. You’ll be working as part of an international team in a new research institute on the waterfront in downtown Lisbon. Your work will support cutting-edge research in neuroscience exploring the biological bases of behavior and cognition.
Responsibilities:
The Systems Administrator will lead the design, development and management of the IT infrastructure for the Neuroscience Team (up to 200 personnel) within the new institute. The Systems Administrator will report to the Neuroscience Coordinator and work in close conjunction with both scientific research teams and IT services at the institute. The Systems Administrator will manage one or more neuroscience IT team members. The primary responsibility is to develop systems for the collection, storage and analysis of large and complex data sets, but will include a broad and evolving range of tasks, including:
■Develop and manage server infrastructure for storage and data management, including data safety and integrity, disaster recovery, host and client access, file permissions and user accounts, and system security
■Support multiple heterogeneous state-of-the-art client platforms running Windows, Linux and MacOS used for collection of scientific data and by the neuroscience team
■Develop and implement training procedures, manuals and training programs for users on the use of operating systems, networking, applications, and databases.
■Support various commercial and open source systems used for the collection and analysis of scientific data
■Design and manage high-performance scientific computing resources for simulation and data analysis
■Research, evaluate, install, configure, and troubleshoot hardware, peripherals, and equipment
■Integrate the neuroscience team’s IT infrastructure with the IT infrastructure of the new institute and coordinate IT services and policies with the institute’s IT services team
■Design, develop and deploy and web services, including applications to access and manage data, applications for scheduling resources and online services to support the PhD program
■Develop and maintain wiki software for internal knowledge bases
■Maintain a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems
■Conduct growth analysis and capacity planning; develop capital and operating budget proposals
■Manage IT personnel that support the neuroscience team
Qualifications
As researchers, we are working on the cutting edge of technology and always trying to push the envelope and we are seeking a person with professional experience with the capacity and desire to do the same.
■3+ years experience in Linux/Unix systems administration
■Experience with Windows Server and MacOS X Server systems administration
■Experience supporting Linux/Unix, MacOS X and windows clients in a networked environment
■Experience in installation, management and programming database servers (e.g. MySQL) and backup infrastructures (e.g. AFS)
■Experience in internet services and serves (e.g. Apache, NFS, DHCP, etc.) and scripting languages (e.g. Java, Perl, CGI)
■Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group
Desirable
■Management experience in a professional IT environment
■Prior experience in a research or academic environment
■An advanced degree in computer science or related discipline

The Champalimaud Neuroscience Team is scientific research program with the aim of understanding the biological basis of behavior and cognition. The research teams include members from across the world. In addition to research, we also organize PhD programme, workshops and public events. Starting in early 2011, the CNP will join the Champalimaud Research Centre, where it is expected to grow to over 150 scientists.
